A car seat is synonymous with safety and by law, it’s mandatory to use a one right up until your child hits either 135 cm in height or 12 years of age. Child car seats or Group 2 & 3 seats are the last category of car seats designed for older children.

Baby car seats or Group 0+, are meant from birth to around 15 months and are rearward-facing, while toddler or Group 1 car seats are mostly forward-facing and last from around 9 months up until 4 years. Once your child hits 3 or 4 years of age they are no longer required to be strapped to the car seat itself, thus kids car seats don’t have a built-in harness but allows for your car’s own seatbelt to be used instead.

Why you need a kids car seat

These high-back booster style car seats for kids provide your child with extra height in the back which helps to reduce travel sickness. They are designed with deep side wings that offer full body support upon any impact. The headrests are fully adjustable which allows your kid to have a growth spurt without affecting their safety in your vehicle. These kids car seats themselves are commonly adjustable as well, with a lever to increase the seat depth. This accommodates your little one’s growing legs.

Safety first with your child car seat

It’s important to check how your child car seat will fit into your car. Most use ISOFIX connectors to clip into your car’s anchor points, although the old-fashioned way of simply using your car’s seat belt is still a viable alternative.

Once installed, make sure the lap and shoulder belts fit correctly. The lap belt should be low across the hips and the shoulder belt needs to lie across the shoulder. Do not put the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back.

Lastly, Make sure your child fits the weight and height requirements for the booster you buy, and measure your child throughout the year to ensure they still fit the recommended kids car seat guidelines.
